In the first Kanda of the Taittiriya Samhita of the Krishna Yajurveda, the third Prashna — the animal (sacrifice) in the Agnistoma. Om, salutations to the Supreme Self, salutations to Shri Mahaganapati, Salutations to the revered gurus. Harih Om. At the impulse of the god Savitar, I take you with the arms of the Ashvins, with the hands of Pushan. You are the sickle, you are the handle. The demon has been scraped around; the hostile powers have been scraped around. I cut off the neck of this demon, of him who hates us and whom we hate. I cut off his neck. For heaven you, for the atmosphere you, for the earth you. May the world of the fathers purify you. You are barley; drive away hatred from us, drive away hostilities. Drive away hostilities. You are the seat of the fathers. Prop up the sky, fill the atmosphere, make the earth firm. May the wind, having shone, diminish you. With the firm law of Mitra and Varuna, I surround you as the possessor of sacred knowledge, as the possessor of power, as the possessor of good offspring, as the possessor of wealth and prosperity. Make sacred knowledge firm, make power firm, make offspring firm, make wealth and prosperity firm. With ghee, fill heaven and earth. You are the seat of Indra, the shadow of all people. O praiser, may these praises be around you from all sides. May the growths, pleasing, be for the growth of life. You are Indra's goad, you are Indra's firm one, you are Indra's goad. For Indra you. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I dig up the Vishnu offerings. This Valaga that has been buried, I cast it up. Whoever has buried it for us, whether one of our own or a stranger, I make him lower. Whoever, whether one of our own or a stranger, acts as an enemy against us, the Valaga is pressed down by the Gayatri meter. What good is there here? That is for both of us. You are the Virat, slayer of rivals; you are the Samrat, slayer of brothers' enemies; you are the Svarat, slayer of assailants; you are the Visvarat, slayer of all evil powers. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I sprinkle the Vishnu offerings. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I lead away the Vishnu offerings. You are barley; drive away hatred from us, drive away enemies. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I spread out the Vishnu offerings. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I offer oblations to the Vishnu offerings. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I place down the Vishnu offerings. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I cover the Vishnu offerings. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, I spread around the Vishnu offerings. O slayer of demons, O slayer of Valaga, O Vishnu offering, you are great; great is the stone; speak forth a great speech for Indra. AI
You are all-pervading; you are the carrier; you are the bearer, the carrier of oblations. You are the far-reaching, the wise; you are the swift, the all-knowing. You are the eager, the poet; you are the one who brings distress, the one who brings fear. You are the helper, the one who gives; you are the purifier, the one to be cleansed. You are the sovereign, the one who furrows; you are the one who sits around, the purifying one. You are the one who spreads, the one who is in the clouds. You are the one who is wiped clean, the one who cooks the oblation. You are the one whose abode is truth, the one whose light is the sun. You are the light of Brahman, the one whose abode is the sun. You are the unborn, the one-footed; you are the serpent, the one in the depths. With the Rudra host, protect me; O Agni, fill me, do not injure me. AI

O Soma, you are the skin, the body-maker for those who are body-less, for the hateful ones, for those made otherwise; you are the wide protector, the shield. Svaha! Being pleased, may he accept the offering of ghee. Svaha! May this Agni make welfare for us; may this one go before, breaking the foes; may this one, rejoicing, conquer the enemies; may this one win the prize in the winning of prizes. O wide Vishnu, stride widely; make wide room for us to dwell. O ghee-backed one, drink the ghee; drive the lord of the sacrifice forward. Soma goes to the paths, goes to the gods, to the refuge, to the seat of truth, to the seat of Aditi. Sit on the seat of Aditi. This Soma, O gods, is your savior; may he protect you; let him not deceive you. This skin, O Soma, the god has approached the gods; I, a man, have approached men, together with offspring, together with increase of wealth. Homage to the gods! Svadha to the fathers! I have freed myself from Varuna's noose; I have looked up to the sun. O Agni, lord of vows, you are the lord of vows of vows. Whatever of my body was in you, let that be in me; whatever of your body was in me, let that be in you. Thus, O lord of vows, the vows of those who observe vows. || 8 || AI
I have gone beyond others; I have approached others; I have crossed over you with those beyond; I have crossed beyond with those below. I appease you, O Vishnu, for the worship of the gods. The god Savitr has anointed you with ghee. O plant, save him; O axe, do not injure him. Do not cut above the sky; do not injure the middle atmosphere; be united with the earth. O lord of the forest, with a hundred branches, grow up; with a thousand branches, may we grow up. The axe, sharpened, has led you forward for great good fortune. Unbroken is wealth, with good heroes. || 9 || AI

For the earth I purify you, for the atmosphere I purify you, for heaven I purify you. The world of the fathers is your seat. You are barley; drive away hatred from us, drive away enemies. You are the seat of the fathers. You are self-possessing. Go before the leaders. The lord of the forest shall stand upon you. Having known that, may the god Savitr anoint you with honey. For well-nourished plants I raise you upward. Prop up the heaven, fill the atmosphere, make the earth firm beneath. We desire your abodes. May the cows come here, where there are many-horned, swift ones. There indeed the supreme abode of the far-striding Vishnu shines forth, of the great one. See the deeds of Vishnu, from where he has beheld the vows. The companion of Indra's yoking. The sages always see that supreme abode of Vishnu, like an eye extended in heaven. I surround you with the splendor of sacred knowledge, with the splendor of royal power, with the splendor of good offspring, with the splendor of increase of wealth. Make firm sacred knowledge, make firm royal power, make firm offspring, make firm increase of wealth. You are a covering. May the divine peoples enclose you. May the increase of wealth enclose this sacrificer. I hide you in the ridge of the atmosphere. AI

For nourishment I invoke you. O gods, divine peoples, come forward, bearers of offerings, sages. O Brihaspati, hold the treasures. May the oblations be sweet to you. O god Tvashtar, may the pleasant, wealthy ones rejoice. You are the generator of Agni. You two are bulls. You are the life of Urvashi. O Pururavas, you are anointed with ghee; you place the bull. Be born after the Gayatri meter. Be born after the Trishtubh and Jagati meters. Be gracious to us, of one mind, of one dwelling, of beautiful form. Do not harm the sacrifice, do not harm the lord of the sacrifice, O Jatavedas. Be auspicious to us today. Agni moves within Agni, entered in; this is the son of the sages, the sovereign. Having made the svaha offering, I offer to you with sacred knowledge; may there be no false share for the gods. AI

May Agni hear my call with the fuel; may the waters and the divine Dhiṣaṇā hear; may the stones hear, the wise ones now. May the divine Savitar hear my call, the sacrifice. Divine waters, the wave of the waters, the drink of the waters, possessing vigor, most intoxicating — that give to the gods, to the gods; the bright to the bright ones, whose share you are. Svaha! You have made the offering. Of the waters, the sea's, of you, the unexhausted, I draw up. O Agni, the mortal whom you helped in battles, in contests, O Junas — he shall be the guide of everlasting refreshments. AI

You, O Agni, are Rudra, the Asura, the great one of heaven; you are the host of the Maruts, the nourisher; you are the lord. You go with the ruddy, fair-complexioned winds; you, Pusan, protect the worshipper with praise. To you, the king of the sacrifice, the Hotar Rudra, the true sacrificer of the two worlds — do you all make for yourselves, for help, the golden-formed Agni. Agni, the Hotar, the most worthy of worship, has sat down in the lap of his mother, in the fragrant world. The young sage, most firmly established, the truthful one, the supporter of the peoples, and in the middle, kindled. He has made the divine invocation well today; we have found the tongue of the sacrifice, the hidden one. He has come to life, clothed in fragrance; he has made the auspicious divine invocation for us today. Agni cried out like the thundering sky; the earth licked the plants, joining them together. Being born at once, when kindled, he has looked around; he shines between the two worlds with his light. In you, O Hotar, the treasures of the dawn and the evening are placed, O bearer of the offering. The sacrificial ones have set in you, the pure one, all beings as in a field, and all auspicious qualities. To you, O best of the Angirasas, all the well-dwelling ones have separately submitted, O Agni, for their desire. May we attain that desire, O Agni, through your help; may we attain wealth, O lord of wealth, with good heroes. May we attain food, striving for food; may we attain glory, O Agni, that is undecaying and not aging. Bring the best, O youngest, O Agni of the Bharatas, the glorious one. AI

O good one, bring wealth that is much desired. He who is white, thundering, abiding in the luminous region, most youthful, roared with unaging, resounding ones. He who is pure, most abundant, the fire that follows many broad paths, consuming. This fire, most excellent, bestowing life from all sides, may he come to you. Again your breath comes back; I send away your disease. O Fire, giving life, enjoying the offering, become one whose look is ghee, whose source is ghee. Having drunk ghee and sweet, pleasant cow's milk, like a father a son, may he protect this one. To you, O Jatavedas, is this offered, O you who move among people. O Fire, I know your well-praised hymn. From heaven first was Fire born, from us second was Jatavedas. Third in the waters, O man-leader, unceasingly kindling him, the self-possessed ones praise him. O pure, purifying, praiseworthy Fire, you shine forth greatly. You, invoked with ghee offerings. Seen as gold, you shone across the wide earth, unbearable, life for splendor, shining. Fire became immortal through his powers, when heaven, having good seed, generated him. When the brilliance of the lord of men reached the offering, pure seed poured near heaven. Fire, the young man, generated the faultless host, self-possessed, and made them prosper. With that sharpened mind, aided by you, and do you instruct the pupil of the self-possessed one. O Fire, may we be in the abundance of wealth of the most manly, and may we have your well-praised hymns of wealth. O Fire, bring the enduring, the overpowering wealth of brilliance. All the people, by his approach, he overpowers in battles. That fire, the overcomer of hosts, bring wealth, O powerful one. For you are the true, wonderful giver of wealth with cattle. To the ox-eating, to the horse-eating, to the one whose back is soma, to the wise one. With praises we serve Fire. For the wise one, O son, the seat of the altar, Fire by birth made the path of food. He, the strength-giver, giving strength, like a king among men, will dwell in the pasture. O Fire, the lives, purify, and bring strength and food to us. Drive away misfortune from afar. O Fire, purify, O good worker, for us brilliance, good heroism. Granting prosperity and wealth to me. O Fire, purifying, with your light, with your delightful tongue, O god. Bring the gods here, and worship them. He, O purifying one, shining, O Fire, bring the gods here. Bring the sacrifice and our offering. Fire, most pure in vows, pure, the inspired poet, pure, the sage. Pure, he shines when invoked. Up, O Fire, your pure, bright, shining flames rise. Your rays, your lights. AI
