Summary — English
The Ganga Ashtakam 2 is a hymn of eight verses praising the goddess Ganga, describing her as the purifier of the gods' river who descends from the heavenly world, blossoms on Shiva's matted locks, and fills the ocean. It recounts her origins as water in Brahma's ritual vessel, the foot-water of the Lord reclining on the serpent, and the daughter of the sage Jahnu, and it celebrates her power to free those who touch even a drop of her water from the stain and dread of the Kali age. The hymn praises her presence in Kashi and her role as a stairway to heaven, and it expresses the devotee's wish to worship Krishna on her bank and to remember Narayana's feet at the time of death. It states that whoever recites this holy Ganga Ashtakam, being pure and self-controlled, is freed from all sins and goes to the world of Vishnu.

O Goddess, those living beings who touch a single drop-sized particle of your water — which is the crest-jewel garland of Shiva's worldly play — roll in the lap of the women of the immortal city who hold yak-tail fans, freed from the stain and dread of the age of Kali. AI

AI

She who splits the cosmic egg, who makes the matted locks on Shiva's head blossom, who descends from the heavenly world, who slips down from the rocky caves of the golden mountain, who rolls upon the surface of the earth, who thoroughly rebukes the armies of accumulated sins, who fills the ocean — may that purifier of the gods' river, the heavenly stream, cleanse us. AI

May the water of the Ganga protect us — water swarming with bees intoxicated by the fragrance of the rut flowing from the temples of elephants (sinners) bathing in it; water tawny from the contact of saffron slipping from the breasts of the women of the Siddhas as they bathe; water whose banks are strewn with the kusha grass and flowers of sages at evening and morning; water whose waves are seized by the trunks of elephants and by crocodiles. AI

AI

At first, water in the vessel of the ritual duties of the primal grandsire (Brahma); afterwards, the holy foot-water of the Lord who reclines on the serpent; again, this daughter of the great sage Jahnu, a jewel adorning Shiva's matted locks — may the Goddess Bhagirathi, destroyer of sins, protect me. AI

AI

She who descended from the king of mountains, who ferries across those who plunge into her own water, who sports in the ocean, who drives away the ranks of the fear of worldly existence, who imitates the limbs of Shesha, who is like a tender leaf on the creeper of Shiva's head, who sports in the region of Kashi — the mind-stealing Ganga is victorious. AI

AI

Where is a wave of yours, O Ganga, if it has come within the range of the eye? Having been drunk by you, you grant residence in the city of the yellow-clad one (Vishnu). If the body of embodied beings falls on your lap, O Mother, then even the attainment of the state of the quiescent sacrifice is exceedingly trivial. AI

AI

O Goddess, on your bank I, eating only water, free from craving for sense objects, worship Krishna. O Goddess Ganga, who destroys all impurities, who is the stairway to heaven, whose waves are swift and restless — be pleased with me. AI

AI

O Mother Jahnavi, united with Shiva, placing my joined palms on my head, at the time of the end of my body on your bank, remembering with joy the two feet of Narayana at the festival of my soul's departure — may there be unwavering devotion, eternal, of the nature of the non-duality of Hari and Hara. AI

AI
