About
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on the western bank of the holy river Ganga. The temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
History
The original Kashi Vishwanath Temple was demolished several times by Mughal rulers and rebuilt by Hindu kings. The current temple was built in 1780 by the Maratha ruler Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. The temple complex was recently renovated under the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project.
🕉 Significance
Hindus believe that a visit to Kashi Vishwanath and a dip in the Ganga washes away all sins and leads to moksha (liberation). Lord Shiva himself is said to whisper the Taraka mantra into the ears of the dying in Varanasi.
🚌 How to Reach
Varanasi has an international airport (Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport) and is well connected by train. The temple is in the old city area, accessible by auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw or on foot from Dashashwamedh Ghat.
